Is Coffee Bad for Your Skin?

There is no denying it. Coffee is pretty great. Although to reflect this, it doesn’t matter where you go, because just about anywhere you go there’ll be at least one coffee shop to satisfy your caffeine needs. A comforting thought, considering the number of coffee addicts in our midst.


That said, do you really want that cup of coffee to go? As tempting as it is, you might want to hold that thought, especially if you value your skin.

Turns out, for all the praises we could sing about this beloved beverage, it can have a pretty negative effect on your complexion. Allow me to count the ways.

1. Dehydration


uch like alcohol, coffee is a diuretic. In layman’s terms, it means it dehydrates our bodies. Which is definitely not something any of us would want, certainly not after we’ve taken special care to ensure our skin is properly moisturized. That would be an awfully big waste, wouldn’t it?

So if you’ve noticed that your skin has gotten uncomfortably tight and even scaly-looking over time, that mug of coffee in your hand might be the culprit.


2. Premature ageing

This goes hand in hand with having dehydrated skin. When your skin becomes dry, it is all the more prone to premature ageing. This is precisely one of the largest reasons why we’ve always been taught to keep our skin properly moisturised. Without moisture, your skin might just end up looking older than it is supposed to be!

Of course, there is a way to counter this. You could drink more water to counter the dehydrating effects of coffee, though this is easier said than done if you’re a heavy coffee-drinker.


3. Acne


Because coffee is a diuretic, it makes your liver work in overtime, which then causes toxic to build-up in your body. As you can probably tell, this doesn’t spell good news for your complexion.

When not enough water is taken to flush this build-up out of your system, you could end up with acne. Acne, not pimple. Not a pretty sight, as most of you already know. And if you like loading up your coffee with milk and sugar? The effects are augmented even more so. Because milk is filled with hormones, it can negatively affect the production of sebum, and to top it off, it also glues dead skin cells together. Double no.


4. Inflammation

Here’s another effect that goes hand in hand with dehydration. Dry skin is all the more vulnerable to inflammation, which is exactly why you often see dry-skinned folk with red patches of skin, particularly on their cheeks.

 As if dryness and premature ageing aren’t bad enough- now you have inflamed skin to think about as well. Talk about a nightmare! Again, you can easily counter this by drinking more water. A lot more water if you’re the type to really love your coffee.


5. Dullness


Have you ever noticed how dry skin tends to be rather dull-looking? I’m not saying this to be cruel; it is mere fact, just like how oily skin tends to have larger pores.

To be terribly blunt, once coffee has dehydrated your skin to the point that it has become rather dry, you can expect your skin to behave like those of naturally dry-skinned folk. With the lack of a glow, and dull tone to your complexion, you will look tired despite feeling otherwise on the inside, thanks to the rush of caffeine pumping through your veins.

The only difference besides the obvious? Dry-skinned folk can remedy their woes with a good dollop of moisturizer. You, on the other hand, would have to take the longer way around to fix it; either dropping coffee out of your routine altogether, or drinking lots of water every day.
