Having thick volume hair is everybody’s dream. However, some of us might be unfortunate to be facing thinning hair problem. This problem occurs to both men and women influenced by certain factors like aging, stress, improper diet and heredity. How do we salvage thinning hair? It is crucial to know the cause of your hair problem so that you can easily address the issue. Here are some good suggestions that you can consider:

1. Get the proper diagnosis

If you have been losing too much hair, the first thing to do is to find out what’s causing the problem and get to the root of it. Listen to your body as it might actually be giving you a warning of underlying health problems like thyroid, stress or imbalance level of hormones. Discuss with your doctor about all other symptoms that you faced so you can be diagnosed properly and treated accordingly. Not only you will be able to tackle your thinning hair issues, but also your health condition.

2. Reduce your stress

Stress is one of the main factors contributing to hair loss. Hence, you have to take necessary steps to reduce your stress level. Give your scalp a massage from 10-15 minutes using your fingers in a circular motion. Do this daily as it prevents scalp aging, improves blood circulation in that area and reduce the production of cortisol, a stress hormone that is responsible for damaging hair follicles.

Do not forget to exercise. Physical activities are great stress reliever. Choose any workout that you enjoy - pilates, kickboxing or yoga and exercise consistently. Less stress = less hair loss.

3. Watch your diet and food intake

Poor nutrition due to insufficient intake of nutrients or following unhealthy unbalanced diet like crash dieting might cause hair loss. Malnourished body dehydrates the scalp and hair, resulting more-than-ordinary shedding.

Plan your diet wisely. Have a balanced meal. Don’t forget to include protein packed food like meat and fish as they are great for your hair. A healthy diet will result in healthy, moisturized and nourished hair.

4. Add more vitamins and supplements

Low level of Vitamin D and B will affect your hair growth process. Get vitamins to keep your follicles healthy, control hair fall and encourage hair growth. Apart from these two, a sufficient supply of zinc and iron will do the job too. However, it is advisable to consult your doctor or any healthcare professional first regarding this matter.

5. Be kind to your hair (and your scalp!)

The way you comb, wash and style your hair may help you to reduce hair fall problems.

  • Use a clean wooden wide-tooth comb to untangle your hair, followed by your regular comb or brush. Avoid combing or brushing vigorously especially when your hair is wet. Hair is more elasticated at this phase. These acts will rough up cuticles and causes hair breakage.

  • Washing hair frequently strips the natural oil of your hair. You will end up with dry hair and scalp. It is suggested to shampoo just thrice a week in order to remove impurities such as dust, dirt, oil and clear the clogged follicles.

  • Intensely drying your hair with a towel is a big NO. It will cause more damage (split ends, frizz, vulnerable strands breakage) than you realized. Towel tends to absorb more moisture than necessary. As an alternative, use a cotton t-shirt. The fine threads are gentler and could absorb the right moisture. The best method is to air dry your hair. Gently squeeze out the excess water from your hair. Let it dry naturally.

  • Choose the right hair care products. Opt for sulfate, silicone, and paraben-free shampoos, conditioner and other hair products to maintain your hair and scalp.

  • When it comes to styling, just remember - style it right. Go slow on chemical treatments, excessive blow drying, heated curling or straightening ironing, and do not get too excited with coloring. Too much harsh chemicals and styling are harmful to your hair.

  • Avoid hairstyles like tight ponytails and buns as these pull on styles could cause breakage and eventually lead to excessive hair loss.

  • Once a while, resort to hair and scalp treatment. You can either do it by yourself in the comfort of your own home (there are various home remedy solutions for hair available) or make an appointment at a saloon for a hair spa treatment. This kind of treatment is needed from time to time to strengthen and nourish your hair, making it grows faster, thicker and healthier.
