If there is one event that counts as most important in fashion, it is the annual Met Gala. It first started in 1948 as a fundraiser for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City, USA and now, it has turned into the biggest day in fashion where A-list celebrities and supermodels walk the carpet, showing off their designer avant-garde outfits.
Every year, the Met Gala comes up with a theme for the guests to follow and also challenge fashion designers to pour out their creative ideas according to the subject matter. This year sees “Camp: Notes on Fashion” as the theme. Do not worry, we are just as clueless as you are with this year’s theme, but if we had to guess, it is about embracing and normalising the bizarre.
A lot of celebrities showed up in their own interpretation of Camp. Here are some of the best (read: craziest) Met Gala outfits we saw on the carpet this year.
1. Anderson .Paak
Let us start with something a little bit simpler than the rest of the attendees that day. Rapper/Singer Anderson .Paak came in all things Gucci that are encrusted with diamonds including those cool glasses that we wish we could get our hands on.
2. Bella Hadid
Supermodel Bella Hadid stunned everyone with her new jet-black pixie haircut which coincidentally (or was it?) matched her Moschino outfit. We can’t help but stare at the details of her gown which we noticed the colourful crystals that are attached to her arm, looking like a fashionable Thanos from “Avengers: Infinity War”. Just do not let her snap her fingers!
3. Billy Porter
Well, we did mention that the Met Gala has some crazy outfits and this one is one of them. Billy Porter wore a custom The Blonds outfit, which was covered in gold which had – get this – wings! This look is close to resembling the Egyptian winged Goddess Maat which honestly, was pulled off quite well.
4. Cardi B
Cardi B closed the event with a showstopping outfit from Thom Browne, dressing in all red with feathers on the outlines of the gown all the way to the top of her head. Calling it a gown is an understatement though since she needed at least five people to carry her train.
5. Harry Styles
Fashion knows no gender when it comes to its clothes especially at the Met Gala. Harry Styles appeared in an all-black sheer Gucci outfit with a jabot attached to his neck, reminiscing of 16th century vintage style. As someone who is more synonymous to the bad boy image, it is nice to see the ex-One Directioner experiment more on clothes that we would not think we would see him in.
6. Jared Leto
Another Gucci representative made headlines during the Met Gala only this time, it was creepier than the rest? Jared Leto attended the event with a red outfit with a heart-shaped diamond attached to his chest. That is not the craziest part though. His accessory to go – a head! Yes, you read that correct. Leto brought a replica of his own severed head to the red carpet which prompted lots of gasps and fascination. But do not worry, it is all in good fun and fashion.
7. Katy Perry
Katy Perry always know how to attract the audience attention when at the Met Gala and this year, she did not disappoint. The American singer lit up (literally) the red carpet when she walked in as a human chandelier. To further complicate things, this custom Moschino outfit also comes with a headpiece which, from the looks of it, is difficult to maintain it steady. We can only imagine the effort she went through to balance her heavy outfit.
8. Kylie Jenner
Truthfully, we love everything about Kylie Jenner’s Met Gala outfit. Her purple pastel hair matched her overall outfit and her tight crochet-like dress only enhances her figure which can make any man drool. The feathers on her arms and legs gave a little flair to her already stunning outfit.
9. Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga obviously had the most fun at the Met Gala red carpet by donning not one but four outfits at one go! Firstly, she appeared in a fuchsia pink dress with an enormous train which must be handled by five men. Then, the layers start to fall off as she revealed a second outfit which was a black gown underneath the first. Then, she undressed again to show off a hot pink strap dress with a 70’s mobile phone as accessory. Finally, she took it all off revealing only her undergarments which in Lady Gaga’s fashion, is the more familiar look.
Zendaya, who is always on point with her outfits over the years, came to the Met Gala looking like a real life Disney princess. Her gown was a modern take on Cinderella’s as she had the look and colours exactly like the animated character. Futhermore, she dropped jaws when her gown suddenly lighted up as she walked the steps of the Met Gala, reminiscing to the time when the Fairy Godmother cast a spell on Cinderella.
