There comes a time when life forces us to do things differently and thus we are pushed into a direction that is alien and even stressful. Getting out of your comfort zone is a little bit like that. But it doesn’t always have to be that way because you will discover that when you leave the zone you trust and love so much it can open your eyes to endless possibilities. In fact it is something we should do once in a while to allow for new perspectives to emerge and to keep us on our toes. So check out these tips to see what you can do to get out of your comfort zone.
1. DO WHAT SCARES YOU
This is hard for some people but ironically it’s one of the ways to overcome the fear itself and get out of that safe cocoon you’ve built around you. Experts say just do it, ride that scary roller coaster. But it won’t hurt to know what you’re getting yourself into. Dig up some info beforehand and be informed. At least you’ll feel less anxious about taking something up for the first time and hopefully develop confidence. Challenging yourself and going beyond is definitely something that takes you away from the norm making life more exciting.
2. TRAVEL, GO PLACES
What better way is there to get out of your comfort zone than by travelling to a place you’ve never been to? Taking the road less travelled allows you to engage in new sights and surroundings. Even better if you get to immerse yourself in the culture and customs of the locals there and learn a thing or two. You don’t even need to go far since you can just opt to explore a part of your city you’ve never visited. Leaving the comfortable for the unfamiliar can be a humbling experience and make you appreciate diversities. So pack up your travel bag now!
3. BREAK AWAY FROM ROUTINE
Take a different route to work, wake up one hour earlier or even tune into a different radio station; anything that takes you away from what is routine. This change of scenario though small may be a breakthrough if you open your mind to alternatives. Who knows, this switch could even trigger new and better ideas to approach problems you are currently facing.
4. TAKE UP A NEW HOBBY, LEARN SOMETHING NEW
Anything new is often exciting so why not go out there and learn something. It could be steps to a dance or how to speak Korean. Sure, you may not turn out an expert and it could be a difficult and challenging task, but the experience will be priceless. It will be a bonus if you have a good instructor or mentor in the process and even better if you have a goal in mind to achieve something in the end. Once you do this, overcoming anything challenging or uncomfortable will not be such a daunting experience in the future.
5. GO OUTSIDE YOUR CIRCLE
We are so comfortable being amongst our kind that we sometimes find ourselves in awkward situations when it comes to mingling with others. So why not be friends with people outside your circle, get to know other professions and see the world through their eyes for a change. Not only will you get different perspectives but you can add them to your networking circle.
There are plenty more tips on how to get out of your comfort zone if only you’re willing to seek for them. So what are you waiting for, be adventurous, get uncomfortable and elevate yourself to another level. Something magical may happen in the process.
