Raya is here and boy, are we all excited for it. Raya, or in proper terms Eid al-Fitr, is when Muslims celebrate after one month of fasting on the holy month of Ramadan. People in Malaysia look forward to this particular day as it means a week holiday for all, good food, and vibrant festivities surrounding families and loved ones at the kampung.

But unfortunately, there are some of us that do not have any kampung to go back to. Either the grandparents have passed making it pointless to balik kampung anyway or our kampung is coincidentally in the heart of the city of Kuala Lumpur. But that does not mean you can’t have some fun at the city during Raya. Here are some suggestions on what to do if you are not on your way back to the kampung.

1.    Go on a road trip

Sure, you do not have a kampung to go back to, but you can always have that same feeling by going on a road trip. Since most people are probably busy celebrating at their respective kampungs, you can expect the roads to be empty making it easier for your road trip. There are many places you can getaway to in order to relax, unwind, and embark in a serene yet fun adventure.

2.    Home makeover

Raya or not, cleaning your house should be a chore. And since it is Raya, you need to clean it more thoroughly especially if you are expecting guests and maybe even decorate it according to the Raya mood. So, channel your inner Marie Kondo and get rid of all your clothes and things that does not spark joy to your home. Give it a decorative makeover while you are at it.

3.    Eat, eat, and eat!

If there is one thing you have to do during Raya, it is to eat. Eating is a big thing during Raya; whether you are going back to your kampung or not, nobody is exempted from it. Although we are not quite sure if restaurants have the Raya classic – rendang, lemang, kuah kacang, sayur lodeh – you can always eat that specialty dish that you are craving for during Ramadan. Now is the time to have a taste.

4.    Head to the gym

That being said, with all those delicious foods you have munched on, you still need to keep track of your body. You do not want to let your one-month Ramadan body go to waste in a single day. Therefore, head to the gym once in awhile to burn those calories and fats off after a big lunch. That way, you can manage to maintain your slim body while still enjoying good food.

Do not be sad over the fact that you are unable to balik kampung, there are so many other things you can do in the city.
