Curb Your Cravings The Healthier Way

Healthier doesn’t always mean bland. Don’t be afraid to peek in here because there really are some healthier AND delicious options for your out of the blue craving moments. Plus, they aren’t boring options either. Although they might require a tad bit of effort but hey, keeping yourself in shape definitely requires a little extra push. So, why don’t we give these some thought and perhaps even a try by the end of the day? Pretty simple. Promise.

1. When you’re craving: Ice Cream

Hey, don’t get things wrong. Some might justify that getting Low Fat Green Tea ice cream is healthy but it’s not exactly right. Though products lure you in with the words low fat and low sugar, it isn’t actually healthy. It just means that they use different ingredient substitutes to compensate for the sweet and creamy taste.

The solution? DIY your own ice cream/popsicles! You’ll need milk, any fruit of your choice, plain or Greek yogurt and honey. Too lazy to puree the fruit? Toss it into the blender and swizzle them into a mush. Honey is your natural sweetener whereas yogurt will be your cream base. Milk binds them all into a thick mix. Don’t forget to go crazy and whip them all together into a heavy base and then pop the mixture into the freezer! Then you’re all set.

Options to try: Avocado (Cream Base) Medjool dates, Maple Syrup, Coconut Sugar (Sweetener) Almond Milk, Soy Milk, (Binder)

2. When you’re craving: Chips

When you get hit by that craving of a salty tinge, you’re probably already thinking about French Fries, potato chips (with a whole lot of synthetic flavouring), pretzels and the list goes on…and on. Curb them with homemade potato chips. A slicer will help you a lot with this but if you’re a hands on kind of person, even better.

Uneven thin slices give added texture so it’ll make munching on these snacks more fun. Bake them, try not to deep fry else they get soggy. Toss the fresh slices into a bowl and coat with a dash of olive oil, add any herb of your choice (or not if you’re not into the herby taste or smell) then add a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Wait for it to bake and there you go. Easy peasy.

Options to try: Zucchini, Kale, Sweet Potato (Chip), Chilli Flakes, Garlic Powder, Vinegar Powder (Flavour)

3. When you’re craving: Candy

Sugary sweets and fulfilling chocolates galore. Chocolates are the easiest to substitute. Get Dark Chocolate with at least 70% cocoa beans content. Go for a lower percentage if you’re adventurous and don’t mind the bitterness. As for candy, you might want to shift your attention towards nuts and dried fruits instead. Dried nuts and fruits can be bought in store so it’s not that big of a deal but do look at the ingredients.

DIY options include buying your own favourite choice of nuts and unsweetened dried fruit. This way you can mix them together and form your own kind of snack. Dried fruits can be naturally sweet on its own depending on the sugar content prior to drying so look up for the sweetest kind of dried fruits that don’t need added sugars if you really need something for your sweet tooth.

Options to try: Apricot, Ginger, Cranberry, Fig (Fruit) Cashew, Pistachio, Almond (Nut)
