Syomir Izwa for ZALORA Eid 2015 collection was largely inspired by Syomir’s appreciation of ‘Malaysiana’. More specifically, he chose the beautiful island of Penang to capture this aspect, due to its rich culture, history, and most importantly, colours — a key aspect in the designer’s visualisation process. Syomir drew further inspiration from the ‘Nyonya Peranakan’ and ‘Anak Mami’ communities that helped to shape the style of Penang fashion and heritage. With Penang as a ‘muse’, the pieces of the collection are lively and bold as the island state itself. The ‘Mami’ culture influenced the second group of designs, with rich colours such as electric blue, yellow, green, pink, and green reflecting the vibrancy and energy of the Indian Muslim community. As for the Nyonya group, the colours were inspired by Chinese porcelain and antique paintings.
